From Gigabytes to Zettabytes: From the flood of data to data management.

The amount of worldwide data generated is growing ever faster. In 2025, some 180 zettabytes of data are expected to be created - that is 180 trillion gigabytes. In 2018, that amount only reached 33 zettabytes. Such extreme growth is driving demand for effective data management and storage solutions for businesses and organizations of all sizes.

The exponential growth in data is driven by the increasing use of mobile devices, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of things (IoT), and of course by the flow of information on social media and e-commerce platforms. Effective data management is therefore becoming increasingly important for companies; it drives business and efficiency. Especially in the field of AI, enormous amounts of data are needed to refine results and answer customers' queries in a targeted manner. These data analyses provide insights to improve processes and drive innovation. Executives in charge also see it that way: According to a study by NewVantage Partners, the vast majority of managers surveyed believe that adopting data-driven strategies is important or even critical to their business success[i]. Overall, the growth and importance of data management in today's economy is undisputed and driven by factors such as the increasing use of cloud computing and the need for real-time data processing.

Product development keeps pace

There are many tools offered by various companies to address the rapid growth in the data management sector.  Key vendors include IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, but also NetApp, an international technology company based in San Jose, California, which offers a range of solutions and services to help enterprise customers store, manage, protect, and analyze data. These solutions include storage systems such as the NetApp AFF-A-Series[ii] / C-Series[iii] and FAS product lines, cloud-native storage solutions, backup and disaster recovery services, data management and analytics software, and professional services for planning, implementing, and managing data storage solutions. Last year, the company achieved revenues of USD 6.3 billion.

Growing and scaling without interruption

Under the term "NetApp Advance," NetApp makes it possible to replace complex, expensive, and time-consuming upgrade cycles with continuous, non-disruptive hardware upgrades.

The NetApp Storage Lifecycle Program is part of the NetApp Advance portfolio and enables non-disruptive upgrades to the latest storage controller technology every three, four, or five years at no additional cost. It also allows users to upgrade their controllers prior to their three-year renewal at a low cost. The program's goal is reducing the time and effort required to upgrade storage and enabling faster and easier upgrades.

In addition, NetApp Storage Lifecycle offers the Cloud Advantage program. Under this program, companies can trade in their old storage controllers for fully functional NetApp cloud solutions of their choice. The program is available with the purchase of new NetApp AFF A-Series, C-Series, and FAS systems. The NetApp cloud portfolio spans all three major hyperscalers and integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructure.

NetApp all-flash prices decrease

NetApp also announced the NetApp AFF C-Series, a new family of flash storage options with high capacity but lower cost compared to the A-Series. The new NetApp AFF C-Series offers efficient flash performance that lowers total cost of ownership (TCO) and reduces storage requirements[iv].

The NetApp AFF A150 is a new entry-level storage system in the AFF A-Series family of all-flash systems. This platform is particularly suitable for remote offices and smaller deployments that do not want to forego the added value of a private or public cloud. In addition, with NetApp ONTAP One[v], a software bundle is offered in which data management software for any storage controllers of the A, C, FAS series provide full functionality.

From AFF to FAS

NetApp AFF (All Flash FAS) is a series of all-flash storage arrays from NetApp designed specifically to meet the rigorous demands of enterprise applications and workloads. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), these arrays use solid-state drives (SSDs), resulting in faster data access and improved application performance. The AFF systems also provide various data management features such as deduplication, compression, and thin provisioning to optimize storage utilization and reduce costs.

NetApp AFF (All Flash FAS) C-Series is the latest generation of NVMe QLC (Quad-Level Cell) storage media. QLC has a higher density per chip and is therefore more cost-effective, with almost the same performance. Large systems with rotating hard disks can be reduced to a minimum while maintaining the same performance as an enterprise flash system.

FAS stands for fabric-attached storage and is a storage architecture developed by NetApp that uses a shared storage infrastructure, connected by fiber channel. FAS systems are high-performance, scalable, and highly available storage solutions for enterprise applications and workloads. They use both hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) for data storage and provide various data management features such as deduplication, compression, and thin provisioning.
