How to Move Your IT Smoothly From One IT Landscape to the Other.

Most business IT systems consisting of servers, networks and clients have undergone many years of organic growth. Moving such complex and highly integrated legacy applications into the cloud-dominated modern IT landscape is anything but easy. It is particularly difficult to carry out IT transitions with absolutely minimal impact on the performance of the companies concerned.

More and more companies are meeting the challenge of an IT transition to replace their legacy IT systems in order to obtain the necessary services from a cloud provider. This move is almost always well worth it, because it can have an extremely positive effect on the company's competitiveness. After all, young companies founded in the age of the cloud have no problems with legacy applications and therefore gain a competitive advantage and the potential to reinvent established business models to overtake existing companies within a very short time.

IT transition with the lowest possible impact

Such transitions should be achieved, whenever possible, with minimal impact on day-to-day business; the end users should experience as little as possible of the changeover. After all, end users are not concerned about the platform on which their business applications are run; they want the technology to work and be available from anywhere at any time.
Planning is key to ensuring that everything runs as smoothly as possible. Providers of IT services therefore often integrate the transition manager into the project as early as the proposal stage in order to include his or her perspective on the operational aspects of a bid. Once the project has started, the transition manager and his team take care of contractual details; framework and individual contracts are drawn up, service catalog and service level agreement (SLA) must be detailed and defined, and an operational concept must be drafted.

Success means problem-free operation

Project milestones for implementation must also be set. The coordination of transition processes is carried out in close collaboration with the technical transformation project. As early as possible, the future service delivery manager should also be included in the project.

The client also needs a contact person possessing the necessary business acumen and decision-making authority in order to plan and communicate the sequence of necessary actions within his or her company. As a rule, the transition manager is responsible for the acceptance of any changes made. Transition is only successfully completed when all applications and processes within the new IT environment are running smoothly. Furthermore, all affected users within the company must be able to use their IT applications properly. An IT transition solution tailor-made for a specific business can and should provide invisible support for typical users, but should be transparent for management.
