Your Old Mac Is Being Left Behind: macOS 26 "Tahoe" Will Be the Last Update for Intel Processors.

The countdown is on: According to current forecasts, Apple plans to end support for Intel Macs in fall 2026 with the release of macOS 26, codenamed "Tahoe." In the meantime, nearly all Mac buyers are switching to Apple Silicon, partly because all newer models are equipped with this chip. This shift is also affecting large companies[i]. What are the implications, and how can users prepare for the change?

Apple Silicon is the name of Apple's processors based on the ARM architecture, such as the M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips[ii]. ARM is a family of energy-efficient RISC architectures that dictate how processors function. Chips with ARM architecture are more powerful and efficient, which explains their growing use in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. ARM chips are also used in laptops, servers, and embedded systems. In Macs, they replace the previous Intel processors and offer higher performance (especially performance per watt), greater energy efficiency (longer battery life), and better integration with macOS. This is precisely why Apple switched to Apple Silicon.

MacOS “Tahoe” is the last operating system for Intel processors

The decision to end support for Intel Macs running macOS 26 “Tahoe” will have far-reaching consequences. After the expected release of macOS 27 in fall 2026, Intel Macs that support macOS 26 will only continue to receive security updates for a limited time before support ends completely[iii]. One reason for this is that outdated systems are generally more vulnerable to cyber threats. An increasing number of software providers are prioritizing the newer, more powerful, and growing Apple Silicon platform, limiting compatibility with Intel Macs.

Action is needed, because the transition takes time

The advantages of M-chips make switching a sensible choice. This step is essential for companies that want to protect themselves against violations of data protection regulations. Apple Silicon Macs have advanced security features built directly into the hardware. These features include Secure Enclave, Secure Boot, robust encryption, System Integrity Protection, and on-device processing for AI features like Apple Intelligence. They provide a higher level of security and a solid foundation for data protection. This is critical for regulatory compliance.

Planning for the replacement of these devices takes time and includes budgeting, tendering, procurement, and rollout. As with most IT infrastructure projects, taking an inventory is the first step. It is particularly important to answer the following question: How many Intel Macs are still in use, and where do critical dependencies exist? To ensure a smooth transition, it is advisable to start integrating Apple Silicon devices as early as 2025. Those who wait until 2026 risk incurring high costs. Early planning provides an opportunity to implement modern device management, thereby strengthening the security and efficiency of your IT infrastructure and ensuring its compatibility and future-proofing.

The UMB Apple Readiness Assessment provides support

At UMB, we are happy to support you in this transition. Our Apple Readiness Assessment provides you with a detailed overview of your current device inventory. We analyze which Intel Macs are in use, to what extent they still meet requirements, and whether Apple Silicon devices are being used that are not centrally managed. The result: concrete recommendations for action with prioritization, a schedule, and a budget framework.

Our assessment forms the basis for a strategic modernization of your IT environment. The introduction of macOS 26 “Tahoe” not only marks the end of Intel support, but also the beginning of a new era with Apple Silicon. Those who plan to make the switch by 2025 will protect themselves from increased cyber risks and benefit from better compatibility and modern standards. The transition to Apple Silicon is unstoppable – your old Mac will be left behind[iv].
