Many emergency wards are at their limit. Some have seen their caseload double over the past ten years. Fee models are being discussed in order to better manage patient flows. Virtual consultations can effectively relieve the pressure on scarce emergency resources.

Virtual consultations: Effectively relieving the burden on emergency infrastructure

The overloading of the emergency infrastructure has many causes: The higher average age of the population or complex pre-existing conditions are just as much a part of it as the lack of GPs who can follow patients over a longer period of time, right through to the dwindling willingness to make doctor's appointments during normal consultation hours. Virtual consultations are an effective way of prioritising cases competently, making efficient use of waiting times and keeping emergency departments free for actual emergencies.

Expert interview

Networked medical technology promises more efficient hospital processes and should increase patient safety. Marc-André Schäfer, Head of IT/ICT at SVAR, reveals how digitalisation is proving its worth in processes and what hurdles still need to be overcome.

«The biggest advantages are certainly the speed.»

The digitalisation of the healthcare sector holds great potential, but is associated with organisational stumbling blocks. Carmelo Salmeri, Senior Account Manager at UMB, explains which requirements and measures hospitals should specifically take into account.

«Safety must not be an afterthought.»
